Man
Poetry slam entry by June Smith
Man looked up at specks of light –
Planets dotted in the skies above
Their titles pay homage to deities –
Our morning star, Venus – the Goddess of love
Save for our own world – our land
Earth – named after the soil upon which we stand
Night's darkness harbours secrets – provoking fear in ancient times.
Comets – eclipses, both viewed as portents - signs
Knowledge is power – has always been
Technology quashing myths and terrors
Apollo 11 conquered the Moon
NASA now looking to Mars – We pray for no errors
Some ask "What's the point – such a cost
Why leave Earth and risk loss?"
Some answer "Because we can -
Because we are man".
Poems by young astronomers
